118 Cases of Mpox Detected in LA County in 2025; First Case of Clade I Mpox Detected

Public Health Urges Mpox Vaccination as Los Angeles County Confirms Its First Case of Clade I Mpox That Is Not Linked to Travel

October 30, 2025

Two weeks ago, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health confirmed its first case of clade I mpox in an adult with no recent travel to regions where this virus is typically found. The individual was hospitalized and is now recovering at home.
This is the second clade I mpox case in LA County and the second in the nation without known travel to another country where clade I is typically found. The City of Long Beach, which has its own health department, also announced a separate clade I mpox case earlier this week.
So far in 2025, Los Angeles County has reported 118 cases of clade II mpox.
As of October 24, 12 new mpox cases were reported in the past 2 weeks.

How Mpox Clade I and Clade II Differ

Mpox is caused by two main types or clades of mpox virus: clade I and clade II.
  • Clade II causes mild to moderate illness and has been circulating at low levels in the United States since 2022
  • Clade I may be more severe than clade II and has recently been linked to outbreaks in somme African countries since 2024
Both clade I and clade II present with flu-like symptoms and rash, and can be spread from person-to-person through close contact (sex, massage, cuddling) and sharing personal items.

Our Story
We are STICKITIN.LA and we want you to get dick, not mpox. It’s our mission to make sure that you can fuck with peace of mind, because the last thing you want to think about is catching something.
Led by UCLA’s Hub for Health Intervention, Policy and Practice, STICKITIN is a nonprofit coalition of community-based organizations and healthcare agencies serving diverse LGBTQ+ people throughout Los Angeles County and California. This Pride season and always, we want you free to be horny, healthy, and without shame.
We’ve partnered with Rocco Steele to bring you 10Seven jockstraps if you get vaxxxed at one of our pop-up events. You can find us all around LA this summer, giving out mpox shots for FREE, plus other goodies. Can you get a VAXXXED & HORNY sticker with your shot? Yes, you can.
And if our vax pop-ups don’t happen near you, we want to point you in the right direction to get vaxxxed wherever you are. Check out our STICKITIN CA map to find mpox vax sites, HIV/STI testing sites (including express!), resources for HIV prevention like PrEP and PEP, and harm reduction locations.
